Most American Express card members often think of their Amex points as opportunities for incredible travel. While that’s true, there’s another, lesser-known use for them: redeeming them for purchases on Amazon. And you only have a short time left to take advantage of this great Amazon promotion where you can really save money by using your Amex points this way.
Select American Express Card members can save up to 40% on their next Amazon purchase, with savings of up to $60 when you use Amex points to pay for at least a portion of your purchase at checkout. Other offers include a 30% discount, with savings of $10 to $30, depending on the offer.
This offer will expire on June 1, 2023so even if you’re not in the market to shop on Amazon right now, you have some time to take advantage of the savings.
With many Amazon discount deals, scoring the deal can be a little tricky. But we’ll walk you through it step by step to make sure you get the biggest discount possible when you shop on Amazon.
To get started, you must have an American Express card that earns Membership Rewards points. Amex cards that earn other types of rewards, such as cash back or airline miles, will not work. But there are plenty of Amex cards that earn Membership Rewards points; a small sample of them is found at the end of this story.
Next, you’ll need to link your Amazon and American Express accounts. Add your American Express card as a payment method in your Amazon account, if you haven’t already. Then find the option to enroll in “Shop with Points” in the “Your Account” tab and click the “Enroll” button for the Amex card you just added.
Once your accounts are connected, you will need to activate the offer by clicking this link. Remember, this is a targeted promotion, so not everyone will be eligible for it; you could be the target of any of the offers or none of them. When you click on the link, if you see a message stating that you are not eligible, you are unfortunately not the target of this particular promotion.
But even if you’re not in the crosshairs, don’t give up hope. If you just signed up for “Shop with Points,” you may need to wait 24 hours for Amazon’s records to update before you know if you’re the target, so check back in a day or so.
If eligible, activate the offer by clicking the “Activate Now” button – the enrollment page will indicate your particular discount. You can then shop on Amazon as you normally would, although only products sold and shipped by Amazon are eligible for these discounts. Additionally, Amazon gift cards are excluded, although other third-party retailer gift cards sold by Amazon are eligible.
But wait! There is one more step. When you’re ready to pay, you’ll want to make sure you select your linked American Express card as your payment method. You will then need to use at least 1 point to pay for your purchase for the discount to apply.
When paying with Amex Membership Rewards points on Amazon, 1 point equals 0.7 cents. That’s not the best value you can get for Amex points. Frequent flyer website The Points Guy values Membership Rewards points by up to 2 cents each when redeemed for travel.
However, it’s important to note that you don’t have to pay for your entire Amazon purchase with points to get these discounts. In fact, you can use only 1 point and pay the rest with your Amex cardand you will continue to see the discount applied to your order.
To pay with the minimum amount of points required, enter $0.01 in the points section at checkout, which will apply only 1 point to your payment. You can use as many points as you like, but if you don’t make this change, Amazon may automatically apply the maximum number of points to cover your entire purchase, so you’ll want to make sure you update the amount before ordering.
Once you’ve applied at least 1 point to your checkout, you’ll see the discount added to your order. The discount will be applied to every order you place through December 31 until you reach the maximum total savings, which will depend on your particular offer.
Let’s look at some examples of how you can apply this discount to your next Amazon purchases, even if you don’t need anything from Amazon right now.
With airlines having regular delays and cancellations over the last year, attaching an Apple AirTag to your luggage can be a great way to track the location of your belongings. An Apple AirTag 4 Pack is currently priced at $99 before tax and shipping, but if it’s earmarked for the 40% off American Express offer, the bundle will drop to $59.40, or less than $15 per AirTag .
Or, if you’re hoping to pick up a new Apple AirPods Pro 2, Amazon now sells them for $239. But you can take it even lower to as low as $179 if you’re the target of one of these Amex deals.
And while these discount offers don’t apply to Amazon gift cards, they do apply to many other retail gift cards Amazon sells. Amazon has literally hundreds of options, including retailers that might come in handy right now, like Instacart, Netflix, DoorDash, Whole Foods, and more. So even if you don’t have anything to buy on Amazon before June 1, you can always buy a gift card for yourself using the discount and bank the savings for later.
Plus, you can combine these promotions with many of Amazon’s sales or any of their other money-saving offers, like saving $20 when you spend $60 on select beauty products.
