West Virginia’s two-term Republican governor, Jim Justice, is “seriously considering a run for the United States Senate” in 2024, when former Democratic governor and current Sen. Joe Manchin is up for re-election.

“I want continued goodness for our state. I will continue to help West Virginia regardless of whether I am at home or in Washington, DC,” Justice said in a tweet Thursday night.

Manchin, a moderate Democrat who is often at odds with his party’s progressive wing and sometimes with party leadership in the Senate and the White House, has yet to announce whether he will see another six-year term in the Senate. in 2024.

West Virginia, once a reliably Democratic state, has turned overwhelmingly red in recent cycles, with then-President Trump carrying the state by a whopping 39 points in the 2020 election.

As Fox News first reported, the National Republican Senatorial Committee released an online ad Thursday targeting Manchin and tying him to President Biden, urging the senator to “stand down or be fired.”

Justice, a registered Republican, ran for governor of West Virginia as a Democrat in 2016, winning by single digits. He re-registered as a Republican the following year after holding a rally with Trump, and he overwhelmingly won re-election in 2020. The justice is term-limited and cannot seek re-election for governor in 2024.

“I am seriously considering running for the Senate… I want the continued good of our state. I will try to help in any way, whether it be the Senate or the House of Representatives or the next governor, whatever,” the judge said. . he said in a video he posted on Twitter. “And it is very possible that he is doing it from home. Or he could very well be doing it from Washington. That’s just my thinking.”

Republican Rep. Alex Mooney is already in the running for the West Virginia Republican Senate nomination in 2024, after launching a campaign in November. In addition, the state’s Republican attorney general, Patrick Morrisey, is also considering a run for the Senate.
